Methodology:

The Atellica® IM Homocysteine (HCY) assay is for in vitro diagnostic use in the quantitative determination of total homocysteine in human serum using the Atellica® IM Analyzer. This diagnostic test is designed to quantitatively measure homocysteine in plasma and serum.

Clinical Info:

To aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients suspected of having homocysteinuria or hyperhomocysteinemia, and to screen patients who may be at risk for heart disease and stroke.

Test Limitations:

- Patients taking methotrexate, nicotinic acid, theophylline, nitrous oxide, or L-dopa can have falsely elevated serum or plasma HCY levels.
- S-adenosyl-methionine is an antidepressant that is structurally similarto S-adenosylhomocysteine. Individuals taking this drug may show falsely elevated levels of HCY.
- Patient samples may contain heterophilic antibodies that could react in
immunoassays to give falsely elevated or depressed results. This assay is designed to minimize interference from heterophilic antibodies.
